Directed Energy Deposition (DED).

This is one of the most advanced techniques in additive manufacturing in sectors such as aerospace and automotive. What makes the DED system distinctive is its ability to work on non-planar geometries.

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)

Powder Bed Fusion (PBF)

Electron Beam Melting (EBM)

The role of AIMEN in the development of additive manufacturing

AIMEN, member of ATIGA, is one of the leading research centers in Spain in the development of additive manufacturing. Specialized in innovation linked to advanced manufacturing, AIMEN has developed projects oriented to the development of AF technology using robotics to obtain large components, as well as using a combination or modification of starting materials, achieving specific functional properties in both metallic and polymeric matrix materials.

Some thirty experts involved in additive manufacturing research

AIMEN’s Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Advanced Materials areas each have around thirty researchers involved in the development of new lines of research.

The commitment to manufacturing processes assisted by DED and FFF techniques has allowed AIMEN to join the Network of Excellence in Additive Manufacturing (READI), which aims to accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing in industrial environments and provides its services to the aerospace industry, consumer goods, industrial equipment, transport or tooling.

This research effort has yielded results. In recent years AIMEN has led dozens of projects that have allowed additive manufacturing to evolve in the European ecosystem. A good example is the European project Integradde, in which AIMEN led 26 entities from 11 countries in an initiative aimed at transferring innovations in additive manufacturing to industry and which had 17 million euros of European funds.

Another example is the integration of AIMEN in the European project AMable – Adoptive Manufacturing of Components and Tools for Batch-Additive Manufacturing-, a network in which universities and technology centers are integrated and that aims to promote the adoption of advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing in the business fabric of the continent.

AMAble’s member centers provide specialized advice and know-how to SMEs that need 3D techniques for the production of innovative products. The network has become an active community where its members exchange experiences to face challenges related to this technology and develop collaborative projects.

AIMEN’s lines of work

Research

AIMEN’s Advanced Manufacturing Processes area is a reference in the development of 3D printing techniques through PFA and MAVA and in the optimization of printing parameters to achieve high quality components.

Design, prototyping and manufacturing of large parts

AIMEN works in the creation and manufacture of functional prototypes of large parts for companies in various sectors, using laser techniques, wire arc, FFF and robotic heads.

Techniques and processes

In addition to FFF, AIMEN also uses DED processes in the manufacture of metals for large components.

Development of new materials

AIMEN’s research has led to the development of new multi-material components, nano-reinforced alloys, filaments based on biopolymers and/or reinforced with continuous fiber and others made from recycled material.

Training and dissemination

AIMEN offers training programs in laser technologies, advanced modeling and other disciplines related to additive manufacturing to train professionals in the effective use of this technology and to promote its adoption in the industry.

Four years after the signing of the transfer of the land by the Ministry of Defense to the UdC and with a delay of 11 months over the planned date, the project of the Cidade das TIC begins to be a tangible reality. The Advanced Services Center, the first building of the business complex located on the grounds of the former Fábrica de Armas de Pedralonga, which aims to promote the development of emerging technologies in Galicia, will open its doors on October 20.

The recently inaugurated center aims to operate as a meeting place between clients and suppliers of ICT solutions and to facilitate the sharing of technologies. The building will be key in the development of the technological and innovation park in A Coruña developed by the UdC, the Galician ICT Cluster and the Galician Government, which aims to turn A Coruña into a pole of attraction for investment and talent linked to new technologies. A complex that will multiply the tractor effect that everyone expects to generate the Spanish Agency for Artificial Intelligence Supervision (AESIA), which will start operating before the end of 2023.

5,000 square meters to house the first companies

The first building of the business area of the Cidade das TIC will have 5,000 square meters, for the development of which the Xunta has earmarked nearly five million euros. It will house a dozen technology companies, coworking spaces, laboratories and a digital solutions demonstration area for companies and institutions linked to the Cluster.

Center for Advanced Studies: confirmed companies

ITG, Imatia, Cinfo, Xoia, Enxenio, Odeene, Tokiota, Dataspartan, Soslife7 or Itelsis are some of the technology firms that will have permanent space in the new building. All of them have a business model linked to at least one of the four laboratories that the center will house, which will be dedicated to artificial intelligence, augmented reality, quantum computing or smart devices.

The coworking area may be occupied by professionals, startups or micro-companies that will have access to the facilities on a temporary rental basis and that aspire to benefit from the synergies generated by the technological ecosystem that is being built in A Coruña.

In addition, a space of up to 15,000 square meters has been reserved to house those companies that are expected to settle in the complex in A Coruña in the coming years. All this apart from the so-called Business Campus, for which 120,000 square meters will be reserved for technology firms and which will occupy most of the old factory complex.

Galaxy Lab: drone test bench in urban environments

 After the start-up of the Advanced Services Center, it will be the turn of Galaxy Lab, an infrastructure developed by ITG and created to serve companies that need to experiment and test their urban aerial mobility systems for goods or people, both in the early stages of their R&D or as a previous step to the certification and commercial operation of their products.

 Galaxy Lab will open its doors after an investment of 1.1 million, with which ITG intends to turn Pedralonga into a reference test bench for any project that bets on the use of drones in urban scenarios. Not surprisingly, the building, which occupies building 14 of the old industrial site, has in its more than 1,500 square meters of floor space an operations area for take-off vehicles, as well as indoor flight areas, laboratories, spaces for assembly and testing, machining workshops, 3D printing and welding, and office, meeting and warehouse areas.

Galaxy Lab will allow the deployment of U-space systems and services so that companies, technology centers or universities specialized in automation and aerial robotics can evaluate issues such as the adjustment of geopositioning, navigation and communications systems, flight conflicts or coordination with real controlled airspace. Issues related to the experimentation with drones in the field of passenger and freight transport in urban areas.

The ultimate goal is to provide Galicia with an advanced AI laboratory that will place Galicia at the international forefront in drone testing.

Jesús Lago, president of the Intersectoral Technology Alliance of Galicia and general director of Aimen, will lead the delegation that the entity will send to MeetechSpain, the event that brings together the Spanish innovative ecosystem and held in Madrid on May 18 and 19. MeetechSpain is the annual convention organized by the Spanish Federation of Technology Centers in which ATIGA and the seven centers that are part of it are integrated.

The alliance attends a new edition of MeetechSpain with a renewed discourse and image in which the emphasis will be placed on the sustained growth over time of the Galician technology sector. Galicia is the fourth largest R&D&I ecosystem in Spain after Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia thanks to figures that have continued to improve in recent years.

The seven entities that are part of ATIGA employ more than 1,700 highly qualified people, have a turnover of more than 90 million euros and develop more than 450 projects for 2,000 clients each year. “Galicia is at an optimal time to continue strengthening our innovative ecosystem based on a firm commitment to the transfer of knowledge from universities and technology centers to companies and the development of cutting-edge technology,” says Lago, who points out that in recent years the seven centers that make up the entity he has chaired since October last year have developed 140 patents.

Atiga arrives in Madrid in a year full of good news for the Galician R&D&I ecosystem. The award to A Coruña of the European Agency for Artificial Intelligence just a few weeks ago or the recent approval of the Regional Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization -RIS3 Galicia- confirm the good moment of the technological sector of the Community.

Atiga, backbone of the innovative and technological ecosystem

Lago will speak on the 18th at the Speakers Korner that the organization has reserved for the various technology centers and regional federations to take stock of the work done over the past year and in which the president of Atiga will emphasize the backbone role of the alliance in Galician innovation.

“The seven technology centers are as compatible as necessary in Galicia. We are living a decisive moment to consolidate ourselves among the regions with the greatest weight of R&D&I in our country”, adds Lago, who emphasizes the work of Atiga as the entity capable of “getting the capabilities and technologies of the seven entities to reach the productive sectors to generate value and development”.

MeetechSpain, first level networking

MeetechSpain is one of the most attractive networking events on the national scene in which participants can demonstrate their capabilities to an audience full of investors, talent and companies driven by the desire to collaborate and the search for new technology projects.

Some thirty research centers from all over the country will participate with their own stand in an event that will be inaugurated by the Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant. ATIGA will also take part in the challenge in which it will measure its strengths against representatives of other technological institutions in the country.

In addition to participating with its own stand and speaking to all participants in the speaker korner, the Galician delegation will be able to participate in round tables and deploy an intense agenda of contacts with technology centers and companies from around the world that will meet at the event to be held in the capital of Spain.
